Taking The Plunge
Taking The Plunge is an Academy Award winning animation short film produced and directed by four students at the School of Visual Arts in New York: Nick Manfredi, Elizabeth Ku-Herrero, Marie Raoult, and Thaddeus Andreades.
The score to Taking The Plunge follows the adventures of a young man who, while proposing to his girlfriend on a beach-side pier, lets the engagement ring slip from his hands straight into the ocean. Diving in, he will encounter various underwater creatures, including a helpful (and über-cute) octopus and a frightening, hungry shark. Although the score is in some ways reminiscent of traditional cartoons from the mid 20th century, the filmmakers wanted to avoid putting too much emphasis on scoring every little detail in the film, instead focusing on the overall story in a more cinematic way. To that end, the score was recorded with a full orchestra in Skopje, Macedonia, complimented with solo woodwind and piano for the tender and romantic moments.
We knew Jerome had hit the mark when we first watched our final scene alongside his score. Suddenly we felt all the emotions we had been trying to portray across our film–and it hit us hard. He reconnected us to our own story and pulled us out of our seats and into the audience’s. No one else could have complimented our work so beautifully.

At SVA Computer Art we produce over sixty short films and animations each year. The first challenge of a short film is to strike a chord with the viewer quickly then enforce the emotions of the film. Jerome Leroy has contributed to the very best of our films with his patience and professionalism. He has the ability to underscore a film’s brightest and darkest moments while providing the thematic continuity it requires.
